Backing Young Bury Showcase
Earlier this week Alex, our apprentice, and two other members of the team went down to St Gabriel’s RC High School in Bury to take part in Bury councils Backing Young Bury’s Have-A-Go event. The event was all about showcasing businesses and colleges to high school students from around Bury in order to give them some insight in to the real life working world and to help them decide on future career choices. Backing Young Bury aim to invest in young people by helping to improve learning and working opportunities . Here at Smarter Technologies we are very passionate about apprenticeships and know how valuable they can be to a business. We currently employee two IT apprentices who are vital to our team and in the future, as we grow, we hope to increase that number . We therefore wanted to show our support, to find out what students thought about the world of IT, as well as showcasing our business and sharing our advice.
The Event went really well and we were pleasantly surprised about just how much the students knew about IT. Throughout the event we had a demonstration where the students were asked to name the different parts of inside a computer whilst our apprentice, Alex, talked the students through what each part did and why it was important. Alex also provided key information to the students about what it was like to be an apprentice. We also demonstrated the uses and importance of network switches.
Many of the students we spoke to said they found both demonstrations very interesting and explained they didn’t realise how many different jobs and services require IT Support to function. It was great to hear that many of the students would be going away with a little bit more knowledge about the IT world and that some may wish to pursue a career in IT in the future.
