Jakes Day of First Aid Training!
Smarter Technologies make sure all employees receive appropriate first aid training for the workplace. First aid can prevent injuries becoming severe, if someone in the office went in to an epileptic fit or went into a diabetic coma would your or a colleague know what to do?
Obviously in serious situations an ambulance should be called. But simply making sure someone is breathing effectively, is placed in the correct recovery position, or is warm and comfortable, can make a real difference to the individual.
I took the course at St John Ambulance headquarters in Oldham. Throughout the course of the day the other trainees and I did a range of theory and practical work covering all aspects of first aid which could be needed in the workplace.
At first I was unsure if I would really find the day useful but as the day went on I realised just how important it is to know as well as how interesting and fun St John Ambulance make the day! I would really recommend anyone at whatever level, if they are interested in first aid, to do a course with St John Ambulance. I also feel strongly that not only will this training help me throughout my professional life but will also be useful in personal day-to-day life too.
It is now a legal duty for an employer to provide adequate and appropriate facilities, personnel and equipment to enable first aid to be given to employees under the Health and safety (first aid) regulations 1981. The HSE states there is no compulsory items that must be included in a first aid box and the contents are discretionary. However the overall minimum requirements for first aid in the workplace are :
- A suitable stocked first aid container
- A person appointed to take charge of first aid arrangements
- Information for all employees on first aid arrangements
